Diversity and Gender Balance

IST recognizes diversity as a source of strength and as an essential factor for success in science, technology and innovation. Academic and scientific excellence today depends on an active policy of inclusion, in which merit and quality are valued regardless of gender, ethnic origin, religion or any other dimension of identity. Fostering an inclusive and supportive community is one of Técnico’s guiding values.

Gender equality is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a timely and important issue in building a fairer society, with a direct impact on the Técnico community, where significant gender imbalance among students still persists.

This reality, shaped by a range of factors, stems to a large extent from traditional cultural perceptions that no longer reflect contemporary society or the diversity of pathways within engineering.

Committed to transforming this reality, Técnico has been developing programmes and initiatives that engage the entire academic community, promoting inclusion in the broadest sense and gender equality in particular. These actions focus on two main fronts:

  • Externally, by promoting a more balanced gender distribution among applicants to higher education in engineering;
  • Internally, by reducing barriers to the advancement of women in academic, scientific and administrative careers.
